An agent working with the project, files and development tools
Claude Code gives Claude access to the working context of a software project. A request can lead the agent to inspect files, locate relevant implementation, propose changes and run development commands. That makes it useful for a feature or bug fix spanning several files, as well as questions about an unfamiliar repository. The resulting code remains available for review through the surrounding editor or Git tools.
The terminal is one entry point, with VS Code and JetBrains integrations bringing conversation and change review into an editor. Desktop and hosted sessions offer other ways to start or follow work. Project instructions and connected tools help tailor the agent to the repository. A local session can act on local files, but its model requests still go to a remote provider; cloud sessions also run the development task in a hosted environment.
Access comes through an eligible Claude subscription or separately billed provider capacity. Pro and Max usage is shared with the wider Claude app, so long or complex coding sessions can draw from the same allowance as other conversations. Current Team seats include Code, while new Enterprise plans combine a seat charge with metered consumption. Permission modes also matter: auto mode reviews actions through a classifier, whereas manual rules and Plan mode support other levels of control. Reviewing the final changes is still part of using the product.
Best for
- Developers using an agent for repository changes
- Teams combining terminal work with editor review
- Organisations connecting coding agents to approved tools and model providers
Limitations
Usage depends on the model, context and work performed; subscription multipliers are not fixed request counts. Permission settings can allow actions without a prompt for every edit. Local development does not mean local model inference. Consumer training choices and commercial data policies differ.

Compare with Claude CodeClaude Code FAQs
Is Claude Code included in Claude Pro?
Yes. Pro includes Claude Code and costs USD 20 per month or USD 200 billed annually. Claude and Claude Code share the plan’s usage limits. The Claude Free subscription does not include Code.
Does every Team seat include Claude Code?
Current Team Standard and Premium seats include Claude Code. Standard costs USD 25 per seat with monthly billing; Premium costs USD 125 and provides more usage. Legacy Enterprise access has different terms.
Does Claude Code ask before every edit?
That depends on the permission mode and rules. Manual mode can require approval for actions, while auto mode uses a classifier to review them. Auto is the current default for eligible personal and Team accounts; defaults differ for other access routes.
Is Claude Code processed locally?
A local session can read and edit files on the computer, but model requests are sent over the network. Consumer accounts have model-improvement preferences; commercial terms generally exclude training on code and prompts unless the customer opts in.
