Base44
Base44: AI app building with visual editing and managed services
Base44 creates apps and websites from prompts, with visual editing, user accounts, a managed database and hosting. Paid tiers add direct code tools, custom domains and GitHub sync, while separate credit pools cover building and app integrations.

Create apps with prompts, then refine the design and code
Base44 combines prompt-based app creation with a managed backend and hosting. Its AI chat builds and updates applications, Discuss mode explores a change before applying it, and Edit mode targets the interface visually. These controls suit internal tools, customer portals and business websites that need both a designed frontend and stored data. The app editor also supports direct code work on eligible plans.
Generated projects use React and Vite with Base44’s SDK connecting the app to platform services. Authentication, data storage and integrations are managed by Base44; custom backend functions require Builder or higher. The developer tools expose code, request activity and a split preview. GitHub sync gives teams a repository workflow, while Base44 continues to provide the application’s managed services.
Export is useful for development, but it is not a promise that the entire backend can be moved without changes. GitHub sync and ZIP export require Builder or higher. The project-structure guide says editor-synced entity definitions remain managed in Base44 rather than appearing in the local repository. The CLI also supports local development for data, functions, media and email/password authentication, while some integrations and social sign-in still forward to the deployed app. A fully independent production backend therefore needs separate planning.
Best for
- Teams creating internal tools and customer portals
- Non-developers combining AI prompts with visual editing
- Developers extending React apps on a managed backend
Limitations
A message credit is not one guaranteed prompt. Credits are shared across the workspace, and live app services can use integration credits. Exhausting that pool can make visitor actions fail. Unused balances normally expire at reset, with a limited upgrade exception. GitHub sync, ZIP export and custom backend functions require Builder or higher; exporting code does not automatically move live data or managed services.
Base44 features
Build and Discuss chat modes
Create app changes through prompts or explore an idea before the AI modifies code.
Visual design editing
Select interface elements and change design properties manually or through AI. Manual visual edits do not use credits.
Managed data and user accounts
Use built-in authentication, storage and backend data services alongside the generated app.
Code editor with live preview
Work with the app’s source and see its interface alongside the editor on an eligible plan.
GitHub and local development
Builder and higher add two-way sync and source export. Local development supports a subset of backend features; some services remain cloud-connected.
Custom domains and backend logic
Starter supports domain connection; Builder and higher add custom backend functions and eligible annual domain benefits.

Is Base44 free?
Yes. Its Free plan supports up to five apps and includes 25 monthly message credits and 100 integration credits. Paid tiers expand allowances and add features.
Which Base44 plan supports GitHub and code export?
Builder or higher is required for two-way GitHub sync and ZIP export. Starter supports in-app code edits and a custom domain but does not include those export features.
Does Base44 include a backend?
Yes. Managed data, authentication and integrations are built in. Custom backend functions require Builder or higher.
Can I host a Base44 app independently?
Exported source can be developed outside the editor, but the app’s SDK and managed services still need handling. Some local-development calls forward to Base44. Moving the frontend alone does not recreate a fully independent production backend.
