AWS assistance with a changing role in the IDE
Amazon Q Developer combines assistance for software development with help inside AWS experiences. Its coding integrations brought conversation, suggestions and development tasks into supported IDEs. AWS Console and chat access serve a different purpose: helping customers understand and work with their cloud environment through the context and permissions of the AWS identity.
For someone choosing a new coding assistant, the current availability is decisive. AWS closed new Free IDE accounts and new Pro subscriptions on 15 May 2026. Existing IDE users can continue until support ends on 30 April 2027, and existing Pro subscriptions can still add users. The end-of-support announcement includes Java and .NET transformation. AWS points customers towards Kiro for its latest IDE capabilities; Kiro has a separate product identity and its own access terms.
Amazon Q Developer remains relevant in the AWS Console, Console Mobile App and supported Slack and Teams experiences, which are unaffected by the IDE announcement. Existing IDE users also have a transition period in which their current plan and transformation allowances matter. The distinction is therefore between ongoing AWS operational assistance and coding access that is approaching its end of support. A new developer should not treat the old Free or Pro IDE offers as open sign-up options.
Best for
- AWS customers using Console and operational assistance
- Existing Amazon Q IDE users planning their transition
- Teams maintaining an existing Pro subscription before its end of support
Limitations
New Free IDE accounts and new Pro subscriptions are closed. Existing IDE plugins, transformation and paid subscriptions end support on 30 April 2027. Kiro is a separate product. Pro request limits and transformation allowances are distinct; usage overages can add charges.
