AI assistance alongside your documents and presentations
Copilot’s appeal is its proximity to the files and apps people already use. It offers a general chat experience, while eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions add AI assistance inside supported productivity apps. For an existing Microsoft 365 user, that can make a document or slide deck a more natural starting point than a separate chatbot.
Personal chat accepts documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and plain text. You can ask about an attachment without converting every file into a pasted message. Microsoft specifies a 50 MB limit per file and up to 20 attachments per conversation; other Microsoft 365 file experiences have their own rules.
Researcher adds a more substantial research experience, gathering material into structured reports with citations. Consumer access belongs to Premium and Pro, alongside Analyst. The old Deep Research feature was retired in August 2026, so it should not be treated as a current entitlement on every Copilot plan.

Microsoft Copilot features
Free chat and image creation
The personal Copilot app offers chat, image creation and uploads without a paid Microsoft 365 bundle. Capacity and feature limits still apply.
Document and image attachments
Supported personal-chat inputs include PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, images, CSV, JSON and Markdown. Upload limits apply to this chat experience rather than every Microsoft app.
Researcher reports
Researcher assembles source-cited research into structured reports, with charts and visuals where relevant. Premium and Pro provide consumer access; organisational licensing is separate.
PowerPoint drafting
Agent Mode develops a presentation outline from a prompt and refines the resulting slides through chat. File referencing in that mode is still forthcoming; adding a slide from a reference file is a separate feature.
Templates and slide refinement
An organisation’s existing PowerPoint template supplies familiar layouts and design. Some new presentation preferences remain in rollout, so controls can differ between accounts.
Memory and web-search controls
Personal Copilot provides controls for saved memories and web search. Existing memories can be reviewed or removed; turning the feature off alone does not erase them.
